Designer Sessions: trifle*
trifle* is a leading commercial interior design agency, specialising in bespoke workspaces for companies and brands. They have a long track-record in delivering stylish interiors that go beyond function; taking in the brand, people and culture of the company. We’ve worked with the agency on numerous commercial projects and approached them to work as colour consultant on our extraordinary COLOUR_STORIES range.
Founder and director of trifle*, Emma Morley, spearheads a team of designers, workplace strategists, consultants, project managers and architects to deliver companies a holistic approach to the design of their workplace. Always looking for ways to inject colour as a way to make work life better, Emma has looked to the skies & surroundings of the agency’s East London setting to create beautiful colour graduations. Emma and her team loved the idea that a feature rug inspired by nature could bring the outdoors in, working as a dramatic addition to a core scheme in homes and businesses. We caught up with Emma to discover more about thetechnically ground-breaking COLOUR_STORIES collection of graduated rugs.
How would you describe your style and what has influenced your design?
Personally, my style has spirit and is comfortable in its own quirkiness. My influences come from a variety of sources; interior encounters on worldwide travels, a desire to spend time outdoors, a passion for vintage and a real love of colour. I’m also seriously averse to anything that seems over-designed, cold or pretentious. Good design should be functional and comfortable. At trifle*, we are led and guided by the personality of our clients. Our skill is in blending the brand character, culture and values into an encompassing design ‘narrative’ for the space.
Can you tell us a little more about your designs for FLOOR_STORY and exactly what inspired them?
As an urban commercial interior design consultancy, we’re always looking for different ways of injecting colour, nature and comfort into our schemes, so that’s primarily where the thinking for the graduations came from. We spend too long at work not to be working in spaces that support, inspire, revive, nurture and enable us to produce our best work.
For COLOUR_STORIES, we loved the idea that a feature rug inspired by nature could bring the outdoors in, working as a dramatic addition to a core scheme in homes and businesses. From our east London studio’s roof terrace, we’ve fantastic views across the city and explored how the skies change through the seasons.
What attracted you to working with FLOOR_STORY and more importantly, the process of rug making?
We’ve been working with FLOOR_STORY on various commercial projects for 10-years now. I’ve watched the business grow and really push the boundaries with designs and techniques. I love how inherently innovative Simon is, simply because of trying to do justice to the ethos of the original design.
Take COLOUR_STORIES as an example; while apparently simple, a good graduation is almost impossible to create with normal hand-making techniques, leaving a banded look far removed from our original ethos. So, Simon worked with his weavers to create a new technique that gives beautiful non-linear fades that are faithful recreations of our original colour transitions.
Can you describe your new rugs?
The rugs are a blend of colours inspired by our immediate surrounding environment in East London, where I have lived and worked for the last 16 years. Maybe, there is a surprising amount of nature and colour to be found in the areas and it is certainly a constant source of stimulus and energy. When Simon approached us, we were super-excited. We’d been exploring ways of colour blending with paint and fabrics, so it was a true delight to play and collaborate on this project.
How do the rugs make you feel?
The rugs are comforting; they connect us immediately to the outside world, and for everyone at trifle* that’s a win-win all round!
