Amechi Mandi
Amechi’s creativity evolved from his surroundings and community in his hometown Douala and has since touched upon many creative fields such as product design, fashion and interiors.
Our collaboration came about after spotting Amechi through the House & Garden Rising Star 2022 prize, it was shortly after this that the ball started rolling with how Amechi could translate his designs into a bold and mood-boosting series of shaped rugs.
The collection itself is influenced by meditation, something that Amechi finds as a key part of his everyday life. Amechi finds his mind visiting seaside landscapes whenever he’s in this state of mind, the backdrop specifically related to the memory of, as a young child, visiting his Uncle who lived on the coast.
This created the basis of the shell-like motif formed from waved lines which was then developed into a series of shaped rugs that overlay each other to create a vibrant yet calming collection of tufted and flatwoven rugs.
Amechi Mandi is a Cameroonian-born homewares designer now based in London who founded his homewares brand Amechi, which draws upon influences from his heritage after finding a gap in the market for traditional, non-colonised African Textiles. Amechi’s creativity evolved from his surroundings and community in his hometown Douala and has since touched upon many creative fields such as product design, fashion, interiors.
Amechi’s brand ethos stretches further than the finished product, the brand proactively supports the communities that have inspired his pieces by working with the social enterprise Hupjefi which supports young women from struggling backgrounds in finding opportunities through education, helping to create a brighter future.
I started meditating in 2021 and each time I’m guided to go to a calm, beautiful and peaceful place, I go back to that beach of my childhood, seeing all the waves splashing on the rocks, gives me such a feeling of peace
